Sheikh Hussein Zubeir, the County Sheikh for Kasese Municipality, has called on parents across the district to refrain from hiking dowry fees for their daughters’ marriages. Speaking at the Nika ceremony for Kabega Elias head teacher of kasese Muslim nursery and primary school at Kasese Resort in nyamwamba division, Sheikh Zubeir emphasized that rising dowry amounts are contributing to delayed marriages and increased health risks among the youth.
He pointed out that many young men are postponing marriage due to the high costs associated with dowry, which often leads them to engage in unsafe sexual activities and acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases.
Sheikh Zubeir urged parents to be reasonable in their demands, emphasizing that affordability could help encourage timely marriages and promote healthier lifestyles for young people.
Additionally, the Sheikh advised married couples to desist from domestic violence, highlighting the importance of maintaining peaceful and respectful relationships within families. The call comes amid rising concerns over the social and health challenges faced by the married couples in Kasese.
During the ceremony, Kabega Elias, who was married to his wife Hajira following Islamic norms also urged fellow youth to abstain from premarital sex and practice responsible behavior. He stressed that avoiding early and unsafe sex could help curb the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and promote healthier marriages.
The event was attended by community leaders, religious figures, and concerned parents, all advocating for responsible social and family practices to foster a healthier and more cohesive community.
