Members of Parliament from Kyegegwa District are calling on government to establish a lasting memorial in honour of the late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The legislators say the memorial should reflect the late king’s contribution to health, sports, social welfare and economic empowerment.
Kyaka North MP Vincent Kaheeru says King Oyo was a hardworking monarch who championed development initiatives, particularly in the health sector.
Kaheeru is urging government to establish a cancer institute in the king’s name or create another significant national memorial that will preserve his legacy.
Meanwhile, Kyegegwa District Woman MP Kyogabirwe Jackie Muganda wants government to name Buhinga Stadium after King Oyo, saying this would honour his passion for sports and his contribution to the development of Tooro.
She has also proposed that a major road be named after the late king as a permanent reminder of his service to the people.
The proposals come as Tooro subjects continue to mourn their fallen king and reflect on his legacy, with calls growing for his contribution to the kingdom and the country to be preserved through lasting national projects.
