Residents of Kyondo Cell, Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality have reason to smile after regaining hope as the long-requested desilting of the devastating River Nyamwamba has finally begun.
Due to frequent flooding of River Nyamwamba, residents in the area have lived in fear of the hazard.
The river has shifted its boundaries and extended towards people’s households.
Brian Kauntura, the LCIII Chairperson for Nyamwamba Division, took time to monitor the ongoing desilting activity.
He commended Hon. Ferigo Kambale and the Government for being thoughtful to lobby for machines meant to desilt the river and restore it to its original valley flow.
Hon. Leonard Kasereka, Municipal Councilor and Spokesperson in the Office of the MP, explained how residents had called for help from the office.
The desilting activity is expected to be completed in about 3 months.
The Government, through the Ministry of Water and Environment, is responsible for contract payments and fuel.
About Shs. 1 Billion is to be spent on the desilting in the areas of Kyondo Cell.
Kasereka urged residents to maintain the recommended distance and leave space for the river valley flow.
Residents living within river hazard zones are asked to always protect the ecosystem and nature in order to overcome devastating river flooding during rainy seasons.
