Singer and Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) President, Eddy Kenzo, has responded to the circulating leaked audio in which he was heard expressing frustration and hinting at stepping down from his role.
In the audio, Kenzo cited growing challenges between the Federation and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, particularly over the delayed release of the remaining Shs 5 billion meant for the artists’ SACCO stimulus package.
He noted that UNMF could not afford to clash with the Ministry, describing it as the “bigger body,” and that his only option in such disorganization would be to resign.
However, while addressing the media in Adjumani on Monday, Kenzo clarified that his remarks were directed to UNMF members during an internal discussion, not meant for public consumption.
He accused some individuals of twisting his words to tarnish the Federation’s ongoing efforts to serve the creative industry.
I am here to work, I’m here to deliver. I didn’t come here to play or solve a problem and I am doing my best. So if I see someone taking me on a pace I can’t handle, I’d rather leave.
He further noted the importance of each entity maintaining its mandate without interfering in the other’s operations, adding that unity within the Federation remains his top priority.
The Federation has to do its work, and others also have to do theirs. But if they create situations that dismantle our unity, then I’ll have no option but to resign.
Kenzo also revealed that after holding an online meeting with UNMF members, they advised him to hold off on any resignation plans as internal issues were being resolved.
I had an online meeting with the members and they told me to first wait and sort some things. I also received calls from officials who advised me to be patient. So, we are good now, I’m still here, and we’re going to work.
