Security forces in western Uganda have repelled attacks on two military barracks in Kasese District, officials have confirmed.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. when an unidentified group of people attacked the Rugendabara Barracks and Kasese Main Station. According to authorities, the assailants were armed with pangas, knives, and stones.
Fifteen suspects, including one woman, have been arrested in connection with the attack. Five of the attackers were killed, while one was injured during the fighting. Officials also reported that five security personnel sustained injuries.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kasese, who confirmed the incident, said the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and police responded swiftly and managed to restore order.
“The situation is now calm. Security forces are pursuing those who tried to escape,” the RDC said. He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to help identify any suspicious individuals or activities in their communities.
He also reassured the public that security forces are in full control of the situation. “People should not be worried. Security is doing everything possible to normalise the situation,” he added.
Investigations are underway to identify the group behind the attack and establish their motives.
