GOV’T URGES GOLD MINERS TO AVOID USING MERCURY

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has urged gold miners to avoid using mercury in their activities, citing its harmful effects on human health and the environment.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Nsambya, Ministry spokesperson Irene Batebe emphasized the need for responsible mining practices, saying the government has plans to support miners in adopting safer methods.

The meeting, attended by representatives from Planet Gold Uganda and various government agencies, aimed to promote environmentally friendly gold mining practices.

Batebe assured miners of government support and encouraged them to prioritize environmental conservation.

The meeting also saw the launch of modern, mercury-free gold mining techniques.

Speakers, led by Lyn Gutti, stressed the importance of ending mercury use, highlighting its dangers to human health and the environment.
