The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, has handed over the Mubuku Youth Training Skills Centre in Kasese district and Fort Portal Remand Home in Fort Portal City to the community, the aim is to equip youths with practical skills.
The centers offer training in catering, welding, bricklaying, computer skills, carpentry, and construction, complementing presidential hubs nationwide.
Ezekiel Kimpi, representing the Ministry’s permanent secretary, urged locals to own and monitor the project, ensuring its impact is assessed regularly.
The government plans to provide equipment to support the skilled youth.
Ngabirano Fred, Commissioner for Youth and Children Affairs, praised the community for safeguarding the institute’s equipment.
The ministry’s plan is for the skills center to benefit not just the local community but people nationwide.
Locals, including Modest Bwambale Kanakerya, LC3 Chairperson for Ibanda-Kyanya, Robert Issingoma, Town Clerk for Ibanda-Kyana, and Isaac Muthima Kamalha, Kyanya Upper, LCI Chairperson, highlighted the area’s biggest challenges due to its topography.
They suggested introducing tourism courses, leveraging Kasese’s tourist attractions.
Addressing the students, Mr. Kimpi urged the youth to utilize the resources to change their lives.
Eng. Chris Opuch, Principal Specialized Safety Inspector, presented a progress report, noting challenges in reaching the site.
Graduates receive UVTAB certificates and startup tools after completion and in October 2025, the Institute graduated 106 youths in hands-on skills.
