The Minister of State for Primary Education, Phallis Kyemutai, says the lack of funds has continued to hinder the government from fulfilling its plan to have a secondary school in every sub-county.

To fight school dropouts in the area, residents have started community efforts to build a secondary school for their children.

Out of the 31 sub-counties in Kyenjojo District, 13 do not have a secondary school. This has made it difficult for low-income parents to take their children to higher schools.

According to Solomon Rwaboni, the Headteacher of Kiswaara Primary School, he told us that children are dropping out in large numbers from schools, and he attributes this to the lack of secondary schools in the area.

Parents have told us that their children, especially girls, face different challenges.

To fight illiteracy in Kisojo Sub-county, parents in Kiswaara have started an initiative to build a secondary school to enable their children to continue with education, after Bishop Reuben Kisembo donated five acres of church land for the construction of the secondary school.

Different people turned up to contribute various items including animals and farm produce to be sold at Kiswaara Primary School to raise money.

Leaders in the area told us about the state of schools in the area.

Mary Kamuli Kuteesa, the Minister of State for Gender and Culture and also MP for Mwenge South, led four other MPs including different ministers to support efforts to build the school.

Phallis Chemutai, the Minister of State for Primary Education, says the government is doing everything possible to build schools in different areas but the need is still big. She also appreciated the people for taking initiative.

Over ……….. shillings was raised out of the 200 million shillings expected to start the construction of the buildings.
